AIR VS SPRING

The discussion 'AIR VS SPRING' has come up multiple times on different forums, websites and ofcourse most of all in side-track talk.

To start, it might be best to clarify the terminology used in KYB suspension. The two main types of suspension used in the past few years by KYB are AOS and PSF. The common spring fork by KYB is the AOS type, which basically is an abbreviation for Air-Oil Seperated suspension. This nomenclature comes from the closed cartridge system where the cilinder is completely filled with oil and outside the cilinder is a mixture of oil, air and a traditional coil spring. AOS forks from KYB can be found in all recent Yamaha off-road bikes, Sherco Enduro bikes, 2017-2019 GasGas bikes, 2019- Beta Enduro models, 2019- Suzuki RM-Z250 and the 2020- Kawasaki KX250F.

AOS Closed Cartridge Spring Fork
PSF, short for Pneumatic Spring Fork, is KYB's way to indicate an air fork. They came in two versions, a PSF-1 and PSF-2 model. Many will know the PSF-1 fork from the 2013-2014 Kawasaki KX450F and the Honda CRF450R from the same years. The PSF-2 fork came standard in the 2015-2016 CRF450R and in the 2016-2018 Suzuki RM-Z250.

PSF-1 Air Fork
At Technical Touch, we create Factory Kit Suspension relying on the high quality OEM systems combined with our own expertise in aftermarket parts, the combination of the best KYB OEM parts and of course our in-house knowledge in creating the ultimate personalized setting. Over the past few years, we have been creating both AOS Kit Spring Forks and PSF-1 Air Kit Forks for both professional race teams as well as many privateers in MXGP, MX2 and many national series.

There are certainly a lot of good reasons why to choose spring forks over air forks and this is what everyone noticed from 2017 till now. Spring forks are very popular due to their consistent performance, familiar and predictable feel and ease of use.
However, KYB air forks definetely have their own advantages which made them very popular with many raceteams we supported in the past few years.

  • Lightweight: by replacing the coil spring to an 'air spring', the suspension is significantly lighter compared to a spring fork.
  • Feeling: Although feeling might be a very subjective topic, an air fork will stay higher up in the stroke at most times, resulting in a different riding position. On tracks where there is a lot of grip such as the MX track in our backyard (Lommel MXGP track), this works really well!
  • Set-up: because the air pressure replaces the spring strength of a coil spring, it is very easy to alter the 'spring rate' to your needs. Once you have found the air pressure that suits your riding style the most, it is easily checked and adjusted before you go riding with the air pump and adapter that comes with the fork.
  • Bottoming: Our A-kit Air Forks NEVER bottom. Because the lack of a coil spring, KYB had plenty of space to increase the cartridge volume which resulted in a much bigger oil lock at the end of the stroke. This causes for a much more progressive character that eliminates any possibility of bottoming. This is why air forks are also very suitable for SX and why teams like Yamaha Star Racing are sticking to Air Forks for both SX and Outdoors.

TESTIMONIAL AIR VS SPRING FORKS IN WMX

Larissa: "In 2016 I started racing a Suzuki RM-Z250 with KYB Factory Kit Air Forks. I went testing with Jimmy from Technical Touch and he got the setting right in one afternoon, which stayed the same for the rest of the season. The setting of the shock we only changed one more time during summer but nothing major for the rest of the season. Overall I was really happy with the settings and only by checking the correct air pressure each time before I went riding, it was perfect to race!"

"In 2019, I made the switch from Suzuki to Yamaha and luckily I got the opportunity to go for the KYB Factory Kit Suspension again. Although the standard suspension on the Yamaha is also from KYB, I immediately opted for the Factory Kit Suspension because of the positive experience I had with it on the Suzuki.

I actually wanted an Air Fork again for the Yamaha too but Technical Touch recommended me to test the Spring Fork first since they just had revised the settings this type and didn't do this yet for the Air Fork to fit the 2019 model at that time. The setting they have made for me works really well and performance-wise I don't notice any big difference between the air forks and spring forks.
If I would get to choose again today, with the big promotion Technical Touch is doing now on the Air Forks, I wouldn't hesitate and go for the Air Forks without any doubt!"
